Every morning, 9-year-old Shivay wakes up before the sun rises. He doesn't go to school. He doesn’t run outside to play. Instead, he sits quietly in the corner of the room, holding a toy car in his fragile hands. He pushes it back and forth slowly along the floor. To someone watching, it may seem like he’s playing.But the truth is — he only pretends to play.
Shivay was born with a serious heart defect called Tetralogy of Fallot (TOF) and only one functioning lung. His body turns weak and blue when he tries to walk. His chest hurts when he laughs. He can't run, can’t jump, and can barely breathe without support. His father, Gaurav, remembers the day doctors at AIIMS Delhi told them the truth — back in 2019:
“Your son needs urgent heart surgery. He won’t survive without it.”
“The cost is ₹65,000.”
That moment broke something inside Gaurav — not just fear, but helplessness. How could he gather ₹65,000 when he worked as a Rapido bike driver, earning just enough to feed the family? Since then, Gaurav has ridden thousands of kilometers, carrying strangers across the city while his heart stays heavy, knowing his own child is waiting — not for a ride, but for a chance to live. Day after day, night after night, Gaurav has saved every rupee he could. They’ve skipped meals, sold whatever they had, borrowed, prayed, and hoped. But life had another cruel twist waiting.
In December 2024, Shivay began vomiting blood. His tiny body couldn’t take it anymore. When they rushed him to AIIMS again, the doctors gave the final blow:
“Without surgery now, he won’t survive.”
Now, every minute feels like a countdown. Gaurav watches his son lie silently on a pillow, his chest rising too fast, too heavy. Sometimes Shivay smiles faintly and says, “Papa, when I get better, will you take me to the park?” Gaurav nods, then turns his face away — so his son won’t see him cry.
